Narrative change need spaces to resonate

Ana Espejo - 11 November 2024

In a world where screens constantly mediate our relationships, we face the challenge of building spaces for genuine connections that truly matter. Through our work with narratives, we’ve come to realise that human relationships and community building are essential to breathing life into shared stories. But we’ve also seen how the obstacles activists encounter—the harsh realities, physical distance, and isolation worsened by the pandemic—have made it more vital than ever to create spaces for reflection and deep listening, where genuine human contact can flourish and strengthen social bonds.

These insights come from our experience alongside diverse groups, observing and learning from the practices of those who work every day to sustain causes of social justice and change. Here, we share some of the lessons learned about creating meaningful spaces that foster authenticity, respect, and commitment.

0. WEAVING CONNECTIONS TOGETHER: CO-CREATION FROM THE START

From the beginning, activists can be the weavers of these gatherings. Their deep understanding of the landscape, their networks, and their relationships are essential threads that shape the fabric of these spaces. We sit together not only to listen but to be part of the same journey, recognising that each story brings its own unique map that needs to be honoured and brought to light.

1. THE HEART OF A GATHERING: WHO DO YOU ADMIRE? WHO WOULD YOU DREAM OF WORKING WITH?

The first seeds we plant are those of mutual recognition. When we select a core group for a gathering, we ask its members whom they admire. This enables us to invite those who inspire and instil trust. The invitation isn’t just about logistics; it’s personal: “We invite you because there’s someone who recognises and values your work.” This openness sets the tone, creating a constructive, deep-rooted atmosphere where respect and inspiration flow naturally. This is the starting point: moving beyond echo chambers and understanding that it’s less about the “what” and more about the “who.” The diversity of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives is crucial for tackling complex challenges and responding to reality.

2. EXPANDING PERSPECTIVES: REFLECTIONS THAT RESONATE

Facilitating conversations, rather than sharing data or results, is an invitation to broaden perspectives. Reflections that emerge from hard-won lessons, stories of struggle, failures, and victories are the reality checks that fuel collective creativity and inspire discussions that spark ideas for future projects.

3. DESIGNING TO RESONATE: DIALOGUE AS A DRIVER OF CREATION

These sessions are not merely spaces to “talk” but to resonate together. The pace of activities should allow time for reflection, so ideas can take root. The design shouldn’t be rigid; it should be organic: listen, sense, discuss, and decide what matters. Together, we shape conversations, ideas, and projects that respond to what’s genuinely needed.

4. LEADING WITH CARE: SPACES OF SPIRITUALITY AND AUTHENTICITY

Leadership here isn’t about control; it comes from care. These are spaces where spirituality is welcomed as part of the process. A form of leadership that recognises vulnerability, that shows authenticity, creating fertile ground for trust. In that trust, solidarity grows, and a shared desire to collaborate as equals emerges.

5. THE VALUE OF RITUALS: REMEMBERING WHAT’S SACRED

Every gathering brings with it a sense of significance. Rituals aren’t simply decorative; they’re reminders of the importance of the causes that unite us, the depth of the experiences we share, and the commitment we bring. Each ritual moment is a pause to honour the importance of being together, to recognise the effort, the willingness to contribute, and the strength of what we’re creating.

6. BONDING: THE FRUIT OF MEANINGFUL WORK

When a gathering respects each person, and is transparent, honest, and deeply human, the result is natural: we bond. The connections formed here go beyond the professional; they become true alliances of the heart, where diversity is celebrated, and each contribution is valued as an essential part of something greater.

These lessons aren’t part of a formal method. They’re the result of documenting lived experiences. Taking emotional bonds seriously as a design practice is part of a quiet resistance, adding layers and depth to everything we do. This is why, at Komons, we constantly explore practices that bring a human touch to any activity we undertake. With these reflections, we invite anyone interested to join this conversation.
