Comms Hub Spain

A digital research on the media landscape, polarized debates and spread of disinformation in Spain paved the way to establish an online learning and collaboration community. In an adverse context, we shared strategic knowledge with multiple actors to confront hate speech using narrative change strategies.

About the project

In 2019, we spent several months analyzing the structure of the media landscape, polarized topics (feminism and migration), and the spread of disinformation in Spain. Based on the research results, we recognized the potential for action in this context and sought ways to test narrative change strategies.

First, we focused on sharing knowledge with NGOs and progressive actors, aiming to help them to grasp/embrace complexity, understand the strategies of antagonistic actors, and develop their own strategies. With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, we initiated a digital community called “Red Levadura” to combat the spread of hatred during the lockdown and amplify positive narratives that promote shared values and empathy. We launched “No les des casito”, a Twitter account that educates on hate strategies to avoid falling into their narrative or algorithmic traps. We also conducted a series of digital skills workshops involving communicators, mostly from social organizations, which extended until 2021.

From the lessons learned from these experiences, an open space emerged for sharing and seeking synergies among experts, activists, and social media users who want to combat hate messages. This space is called Laintersección.net and has gained autonomy, with a team that continues to grow the project beyond Komons.
