The Kenya Comms Hub stands at the vanguard in East Africa, driving public discourse transformation and building narrative power to positively shift perceptions and attitudes towards Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) and LGBTQ rights. By employing evidence-based communication and innovative digital strategies, the initiative champions constructive dialogue on critical issues like sexuality education and safe abortion, alongside providing essential capacity building and networking for SRHR and LGBTQ advocates.

Objectives

Our mission focuses on impacting the media landscape and public opinion to help supporters to position positive narratives on SRHR and gender equality, advocating for progressive policy and legal advancements. Key strategies include:

  • Reducing adolescent sexuality stigma through enhanced social media engagement and online Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE).
  • Promoting positive perceptions of safe and legal abortion access through broadened media coverage and social media dialogue.

Challenges

Amidst a competitive environment and shifting global and local contexts, including the Roe v. Wade overturn, the project navigates through heightened social tensions and threats to activists, emphasizing safety and collaborative action.

Our Approach

  • Movement Building & Strategic Alliances: Leveraging local expertise and networks to forge strategic alliances, enhancing credibility, innovation, and culturally aligned strategies.
  • Evidence-Based Initiatives: Conducting research to inform strategic planning and message development on sensitive topics.
  • Community Engagement: Mobilizing activists and creatives to generate impactful narratives and foster a community dedicated to SRHR advocacy.
  • Tech Innovations: Integrating AI and digital tools to streamline content creation and analysis, enhancing the effectiveness of SRHR messaging.

Outcomes

  • Established a robust secretariat and convened a diverse network of organizations and individuals.
  • Developed and disseminated influential content pieces, reaching over a million people with our campaigns.
  • Supported the constitution of two communities of LBTQ activists developing first person stories to raise their voices and interested in continuing working on building narrative power.
  • Cultivated a digital community of 104 artists, social media influencers, and activists to participate in the campaign
  • Launched an AI-powered tool for effective SRHR communication, tailored to Kenya's unique digital landscape.
  • Convened a network of eight media and SRHR organisations to promote access to safe and legal abortion and to learn and exchange strategic tactics
